Surveys and Campaigns

American XL Bully Dogs

As you may be aware, owners who allow their dogs to terrorise people or other animals are already breaking the law, and there is already a full range of powers to apply penalties to owners who do not control their pets.

Brachycephaly

The UK has some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world and it shares the highest ranking on the animal protection index and the highest in the G7. I would like to assure you that the Government takes the issue of low-welfare and illegal supply of animals very seriously.

Stop the horrors of e-collars

government’s position has been misinterpreted by some campaign groups to constituents like you who quite rightly are concerned about the welfare of our pets. I work closely with animal welfare organisations and our farmers and our standards on animal welfare are among the highest in the world.

Protect our Ticket Offices

Thank you for your email. Train operating companies are consulting on plans to modernise customer service across the railway network but this does entail closing many ticket office counters and moving staff to other roles on stations.

Dangerous Dogs Act

I share your concerns about dog attacks that have taken place in recent weeks. They are extremely distressing and I would like to express my deepest sympathy to all the families of those who have died due to dogs that have been out of control.

Privileges Committee Vote

I voted to accept the recommendation of the Privileges Committee at the end of its inquiry into Boris Johnson. The report ran to around 30,000 words and over 100 pages. I read it carefully before I voted.

Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Act

The European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 brought a large number of EU laws and regulation into our domestic law. This was called Retained EU Law (REUL), and had special status, reflecting the supremacy of EU law, European Court of Justice case law and EU legal principles.

Your action is needed for the People's Plan for Nature

Unfortunately, due to diary commitments, I am unable to attend the Save Our Wild Isles Reception on 3 July at Westminster Abbey Gardens. However, I would like to assure you that I fully recognise that Biodiversity loss is a global problem that needs a global solution.

Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill

I appreciate the strength of feeling around this issue. Around a million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction and the abundance, diversity and connectivity of species is declining faster than at any time in human history.

FairFuel UK Reception

I cannot guarantee to attend the events you mention on Wednesday, because I have other pre-scheduled Parliamentary commitments. However, I am pleased that the Government has consistently done a great deal to help motorists fight costs by freezing fuel duty.

Stand up for Local Educators

I am very aware of the issues as I work closely with the NEU and am on the Education Select Committee. However, I am disappointed that teachers are striking as children can ill-afford to miss any more school after covid.

Cat Theft

Thank you for contacting me about pet theft.

Email Campaigns

Each day I receive several hundred emails and letters, and while I am keen to understand the views of constituents on issues which are important to you, I have to prioritise how I respond to them.

Many of the emails I receive are template campaign emails about Government policy generated by organisations or lobby groups. While I try to respond directly to as many as I can as quickly as I can, I cannot prioritise this over assisting constituents with casework queries – people who are asking for my help with an issue affecting them urgently.

I do take note of all the points made in the course of these campaigns, and I regularly discuss issues with charities or organisations when they raise issues of concern, as well as with Ministers.

I will collate on this page my response to the issues raised by click-and-send campaigns as they arise, and I hope the information these responses contain will be useful to you. Please see the links to the right.

EDMs and Petitions

Please note that I do not sign Early Day Motions as these are never debated or voted on in Parliament, and cannot bind Government policy in any way.

While I am sometimes contacted about signing petitions, there is a process for raising these in Parliament, and only those generated by the official process can be considered. There is no method for bringing non-Parliamentary petitions to the official attention of Parliament or the Government.
