Surveys and Campaigns

Wine Duty

Thank you for your email on the newly introduced alcohol duty. I completely understand your points and this is something I have been in close contact with the Minister about as I know many breweries and wineries in Meon Valley who this will affect.

Strengthen the Hunting Act

The Hunting Act 2004 makes it an offence to hunt a wild mammal with dogs except where it is carried out in accordance with the exemptions in the Act. I know that those found guilty under the Act are subject to the full force of the law.

PCSC Bill: Please protect my fundamental right to protest

I understand your concerns about the proposed new powers to deal better with protests and thank you outlining your views on this issue.

Response on Covid-19 Measures Vote Today 14/12/21

There is absolutely no intention to bring in “vaccine passports”.  We are asking people to have a Lateral Flow Test or to show their vaccination status before they attend heavily-attended activities in a small number of relatively high-risk environments.

Ivory

The decline in the elephant population, fuelled by poaching for ivory, shames our generation. There is a need for radical, robust action to protect the elephant, which is one of the world's most iconic and treasured species is beyond dispute.

Will you stand up for dogs on death row?

I understand the strength of feeling on all sides when discussing this legislation. The Dangerous Dogs Act provides offences in connection with fighting dogs, as well as dog attacks on people and other animals.

Climate Change

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we face, and I can assure you that I recognise the importance and urgency of action on this issue. While we need continued public debate on this issue, I can assure you that significant action is being taken.

Kept Animals Bill

Live animals commonly endure excessively long journeys during exports, causing distress and injury.

Green Investment

Although I cannot pre-empt decisions to be announced at the Spending Review, I know how seriously the Government takes our transition to net zero and a greener future after the pandemic.

Puppy Imports

First and foremost, I want to reassure you that I take the issue of illegal dog and puppy imports very seriously. This abhorrent trade causes suffering to the smuggled dogs and puts health at risk.

Nationality and Borders Bill- refugees

The United Kingdom has a proud record of helping those fleeing persecution, oppression or tyranny from around the world. Alongside providing £10 billion a year to support people through our overseas aid, the UK is a global leader in refugee resettlement.

Social Care

I believe that we must all receive dignified care in old age. With an ageing population, this is one of the biggest challenges that our country faces.

Email Campaigns

Each day I receive several hundred emails and letters, and while I am keen to understand the views of constituents on issues which are important to you, I have to prioritise how I respond to them.

Many of the emails I receive are template campaign emails about Government policy generated by organisations or lobby groups. While I try to respond directly to as many as I can as quickly as I can, I cannot prioritise this over assisting constituents with casework queries – people who are asking for my help with an issue affecting them urgently.

I do take note of all the points made in the course of these campaigns, and I regularly discuss issues with charities or organisations when they raise issues of concern, as well as with Ministers.

I will collate on this page my response to the issues raised by click-and-send campaigns as they arise, and I hope the information these responses contain will be useful to you. Please see the links to the right.

EDMs and Petitions

Please note that I do not sign Early Day Motions as these are never debated or voted on in Parliament, and cannot bind Government policy in any way.

While I am sometimes contacted about signing petitions, there is a process for raising these in Parliament, and only those generated by the official process can be considered. There is no method for bringing non-Parliamentary petitions to the official attention of Parliament or the Government.
