Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond has welcomed the Prime Minister’s statement today that up to 20,000 Syrian refugees will be given shelter in the UK.

She said that David Cameron’s comprehensive approach will tackle the causes of the problem as well as the consequences of those caught up in the brutal civil war.

‘This is a compassionate and proportionate move by the government and one I very much welcome,’ explained Flick.

“Many Portsmouth people have supported bringing in more refugees but we are a crowded city so I will be working with the city council to make sure that we have the resources and space for any that are allocated to us.

‘I am absolutely sure that the spirit of Portsmouth and residents’ kindness will be extended to any refugees that come and stay here.’

She added that Britain is the only country that kept their promise to spend 0.7% of GDP on aid and the Prime Minister had also made the commitment to continue spending it in Syria as well as using some of it to fund any refugees that come to the UK.

More than £1bn has been spent to help refugees in camps in Syria and surrounding countries prior to this announcement.

Refugees will be taken directly from camps rather those who have travelled to Europe in order to stop people trafficking and exploitation.
