This is a letter that I sent to The Portsmouth News about International Women’s Day.

It finally went in on Saturday 9th March.

Dear Sir,

Today is International Women’s Day which, for over a century, has recognised the important contribution and role women have in society and the workplace.

A day such as this gives us a chance to celebrate the great things that many women achieve in the UK, but reflect that there still remains inequality in pay and conditions, and there are too many examples of violence against women.

Women are under-represented in British politics including on Portsmouth City Council where there are 32 men, yet only 10 women. We need to have more influence in the policies that affect us. There are city council elections next year, women need to come forward to stand as candidates.  Let’s start changing politics to benefit all of us.

Yours,

Flick Drummond
