With the funeral for the late Margaret Thatcher taking place on Wednesday, Conservatives in Portsmouth are calling for the city to permanently honour the memory of the late Prime Minister by naming a road after her.
Flick Drummond, the party’s parliamentary spokeswoman for Portsmouth South put forward the idea, saying “Margaret Thatcher will be remembered for many things, not least the Falklands war, in which this city played a pivotal role. I think it would be fitting for Portsmouth to recognise her as the historically important figure she clearly was.”
“The reaction to her death just goes to show that she was not everybody’s cup of tea - but she changed this country. Along with Lloyd George, Churchill and Attlee, she was one of the transformational Prime Ministers of the twentieth century and naming a road after her would be a suitable tribute.”
She went on to stress that any road chosen should be a new and non-residential in nature.
Cllr Luke Stubbs, the Planning, Regeneration and Economic Development spokesman for the party on the council agreed, saying “We’ve already got roads named after Churchill, Attlee and Callaghan, so it wouldn’t be without precedent. Let’s not forget that Attlee was as controversial in his time, so yes, I would support this. Had the timing being different, the new link road into the dockyard may have been a good choice. As it is, maybe somewhere in the new developments planned for Tipner or Horsea Island would be suitable.”
