The total number of jobless in the constituency last month was 1,321 or 2.5% of the economically active population. The rate is 370 lower than in March 2015 and 13 lower than in February this year. Figures for youth unemployment also improved with 200 people aged 18-24 unemployed, 115 lower than in March 2015. ‘Much has been done by the Government to tackle unemployment by having a flexible labour market and, in the case of youth employment, increasing apprenticeships and education opportunities,” said Flick. ‘The latest figures make for very good news showing the employment rate remains at a record high of 74.1%, wages are rising and there are 31.4 million people in work. ‘Of course, more needs to be done to get the jobless rate down even further both in Portsmouth and nationwide, especially with regards to youth unemployment. ‘I will certainly be doing my best to continue to urge local businesses to consider apprenticeships in an attempt to improve these numbers.’
