Cllr Luke Stubbs and myself will be putting a motion to the City council meeting in June to ask that a new road should be named after Margaret Thatcher.

Portsmouth has a history of naming roads after great people, Winston Churchill Avenue, Clement Attlee Way and James Callaghan are among the politicians. We believe that Lady Thatcher was a remarkable Prime Minister, not only was she the first female prime minister  which is inspirational to many women including myself, but she was also the longest serving Prime Minister in the 20th century and fought a successful war in the Falklands.

The Falklands War was a remarkable achievement and it was a sign of the respect that the Royal Navy had for Lady Thatcher when they had their flags at half mast during her funeral. She was a politician of conviction and had a clear purpose, not everyone agreed with her but they knew what she stood for.

At the General Election in 2010, the Conservative vote was significantly higher than the other parties in Portsmouth and I know that this idea will be very popular. Many people have already commented that this is a great plan so I hope the city council will agree and put it in place. We think that one of the roads in the new Tipner regeneration would be appropriate. We would ask either one of her family or a senior politician to come and open it.
