A smart app that allows people to scan barcodes to discover the sugar content of food is being championed by Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond.

The Sugar Smart app means anyone can now scan the supermarket barcodes of more than 75,000 everyday food or drink products.

The innovation is part of Public Health England’s 2016 Change4Life campaign aimed a tackling obesity through better diet and more exercise.

“This app is a great tool and I hope as many people as possible will download it and use it to monitor the amount of sugar they and their loved ones are consuming,” said Flick.

"Tackling obesity is a major challenge in Britain so I also very much welcome the Government's wider Change4Life campaign to help lower the amount of sugar consumed by the whole population and, especially, our children."

Five million Sugar Smart information packs are being distributed to primary school children through schools, local authorities and retailers as part of the initiative, which runs until mid-February and has the support of five major retailers - Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and The Co-operative Food.

Anyone can download and try the app from the App Store or Google Play at https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/change4life-sugar-swaps/id1015850256?mt=8
