A Havant-based domestic abuse charity is to receive £190,000 in government funding to launch a new project aimed at preventing violence after Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond wrote to the Chancellor endorsing the bid.

Southern Domestic Abuse Service operates support and temporary accommodation to women and children fleeing domestic abuse, plus outreach programmes across Hampshire.

The money is earmarked for a holistic approach project to prevent abuse and FGM by addressing the problems at their source.

“This organisation does an amazing job helping vulnerable women and their children in Portsmouth and beyond, and so this money is much welcome and will do a great deal of good preventing domestic abuse and other harm to women in the county,” said Flick.

“I’m delighted that the Chancellor has responded to my letter endorsing their excellent work by making this money available because it will make a big difference.”

The money has come from the Tampon Tax Fund, set up by the Chancellor last year.
