Surveys and Campaigns

Pig Husbandry (Farrowing Bill)

The Government is focussed on maintaining our high standards in animal welfare.

Human Rights Defenders

The UK is a proud champion of human rights and a strong supporter of those around the world who dedicate their lives to defending them.

Israel Motions at the UN

Israel is a close friend and ally of the UK, but it is precisely for this reason that we hold her to a high standard. Some actions of the Israeli Government, such as encouraging illegal settlements and threatening annexation of Palestinian territories, are wrong and contrary to international law.

Vaccinating those with Learning Disabilities

05/02/2021- I share your concern about those with learning disabilities, but I believe that, at least for the initial round of prioritisations, the vaccine must be given to those who are most at risk from Covid-19. I know that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) – which

Environment Bill - Protecting Bees

04/02/2021 - As you may have seen, I did not support Amendment 24 at last week’s debate on the Environment Bill. This is because pesticides are already tightly controlled to protect bees and other pollinators.

Protecting Workers' Rights

03/02/2021 - I agree that we need to protect and enhance workers’ rights.

Environment Bill - Setting Targets

22/01/2021 - I agree that we need to protect natural environment and wildlife, as well as tackling carbon emissions.

Supporting Pubs - Takeaway Alcohol

20/01/2021 - We need to make sure pubs are treated fairly and I believe they should be able to sell alcohol to takeaway. Supermarkets are able to do this so pubs should be able to as well.

Trade Bill Amendments

20/01/2021 - I did not support any of the amendments to the Trade Bill, as I did not feel they were necessary additions to the Bill. As members of the EU we were party to around 40 trade deals with more than 70 countries.

Trade - Food Standards

18/01/2021 - Our manifesto is clear that in all of our trade negotiations, we will not compromise on our high environmental protection, animal welfare and food standards. We remain firmly committed to upholding our high environmental, food safety and animal welfare standards outside the EU.

Treaty with the EU

07/01/2021 - I have read the Treaty negotiated with the EU and voted for it earlier this week. I supported it because it will protect our trading relationship with the EU while also allowing us to strike deals with the rest of the world.

Fire and Rescue Services

18/11/2020 - Fire and rescue services have done a truly fantastic job during the pandemic, tackling on not only their normal duties but delivering food and PPE to those in need.

Email Campaigns

Each day I receive several hundred emails and letters, and while I am keen to understand the views of constituents on issues which are important to you, I have to prioritise how I respond to them.

Many of the emails I receive are template campaign emails about Government policy generated by organisations or lobby groups. While I try to respond directly to as many as I can as quickly as I can, I cannot prioritise this over assisting constituents with casework queries – people who are asking for my help with an issue affecting them urgently.

I do take note of all the points made in the course of these campaigns, and I regularly discuss issues with charities or organisations when they raise issues of concern, as well as with Ministers.

I will collate on this page my response to the issues raised by click-and-send campaigns as they arise, and I hope the information these responses contain will be useful to you. Please see the links to the right.

EDMs and Petitions

Please note that I do not sign Early Day Motions as these are never debated or voted on in Parliament, and cannot bind Government policy in any way.

While I am sometimes contacted about signing petitions, there is a process for raising these in Parliament, and only those generated by the official process can be considered. There is no method for bringing non-Parliamentary petitions to the official attention of Parliament or the Government.
