Surveys and Campaigns

"Fire and Rehire" Tactics

16/09/2020 - I am aware that there have been reports of several businesses and industry sectors, such as the travel and aviation sector, considering making thousands of staff redundant. I appreciate that many businesses have been significantly affected by the Covid-19 outbreak, including t

Medical Cannabis

16/09/2020 - There is strong scientific evidence that cannabis can harm people’s mental and physical health, and damage communities.

Planning White Paper

16/09/2020 - I appreciate the many people feel strongly about this issue and rightly so. At the heart of planning are the very homes we live in, the schools our children go to, the hospital we visit and the roads that take us there.

Wildlife Trade and Zoonotic Diseases

12/09/2020 - I understand the strong opinions many people have on this issue.

Vulnerable Girls

06/09/2020 - I know the UK works with a wide range of international partners to ensure the best results for girls across the world. I am proud of the leadership that the UK has shown, supporting the UN and national governments to keep girls safe.

VAT on Sunscreen

28/08/2020 - I completely agree that it is crucial people are aware of the dangers of too much sun exposure and the risk of melanoma skin cancer.

Yemen and Saudi Arabia

27/08/2020 - I appreciate the concerns about the awful events transpiring in Yemen. I was born there, so this is a country very close to my heart and I have been following what is happening there closely. Earlier this year I was pleased to set up the Yemen All-Party Parliamentary Group.

Hong Kong - Chinese Security Law

27/07/2020 - I am deeply concerned by recent developments in Hong Kong. The UK takes extremely seriously its longstanding duty to uphold the implementation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration.

Whip in Horse Racing

27/08/2020 - I believe that the irresponsible use of the whip is completely unacceptable.

DfID FCO Merger

27/08/2020 - As a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) in DFID, I know full well the good work UK Aid does around the world. As you know, the Prime Minister has announced that the FCO and DFID will merge to create a new overseas department.

Fur Trade

27/08/2020 - We are a nation of animal lovers, so it is only right that we have some of the highest welfare standards in the world. In addition to fur farming being banned in the UK, I am pleased to note that the import of fur products is tightly regulated.

LGBT+ Conversion Therapy

27/08/2020 - I hope I can offer some reassurance by saying that I know the Government is looking closely at ways of banning LGBT+ conversion therapy. The suggestion that being LGBT+ can be “cured” is both morally and medically wrong and the concept of conversion therapy has no place in our soc

Email Campaigns

Each day I receive several hundred emails and letters, and while I am keen to understand the views of constituents on issues which are important to you, I have to prioritise how I respond to them.

Many of the emails I receive are template campaign emails about Government policy generated by organisations or lobby groups. While I try to respond directly to as many as I can as quickly as I can, I cannot prioritise this over assisting constituents with casework queries – people who are asking for my help with an issue affecting them urgently.

I do take note of all the points made in the course of these campaigns, and I regularly discuss issues with charities or organisations when they raise issues of concern, as well as with Ministers.

I will collate on this page my response to the issues raised by click-and-send campaigns as they arise, and I hope the information these responses contain will be useful to you. Please see the links to the right.

EDMs and Petitions

Please note that I do not sign Early Day Motions as these are never debated or voted on in Parliament, and cannot bind Government policy in any way.

While I am sometimes contacted about signing petitions, there is a process for raising these in Parliament, and only those generated by the official process can be considered. There is no method for bringing non-Parliamentary petitions to the official attention of Parliament or the Government.
