Surveys and Campaigns

Hedgerow protection

Thank you for contacting me about hedgerows.

Hedgerows are one of the most important ecological building blocks in our farmed landscape. They maintain the distinctive character of our countryside and provide crucial habitats and food for wildlife.

Dignity in dying

Thank you for sending me your letter on dignity in dying. I recently met with the Winchester Dying with Dignity group to talk through the issues.

Stop new subsidies for burning trees in power stations

Thank you for contacting me about subsidies for biomass electricity generation and emissions.

I would like to assure you that the Government continues to recognise climate change as one of the most serious long-term threats that this country and the world face.

Rwanda

I have followed asylum policy closely for several years. I was previously an MP in Portsmouth which is an asylum dispersal point and I know that in many parts of the country there are pressures on social services and education because of the numbers.

Ceasefire

Thank you for your email. I had a very long-standing engagement which meant I could not be present for the vote last night on the “ceasefire” amendments to the King’s Speech motion.

Live Animal Exports

The UK has some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world which the Government continues to strengthen further.

Please champion your constituencies chalk streams

Thank you for contacting me about chalk streams. In Meon Valley, the health of our chalk down land is of primary importance to agriculture and the environment. I have previously spoken about this in Parliament numerous times and I am a member of the all-party group for chalks streams.

Watering Down Climate Change Commitments

Thank you for contacting me about nature and the climate crisis. This topic is very important to me and I am an actively involved in holding the Government to account through being a member of the Conservative Environment Network.

Please help give UK shoppers make choices they can trust

My ministerial colleagues and I want to make it easier for the consumer to purchase food that aligns with their values, by improving transparency and providing the industry with a level playing field to promote such products.

Solar

Thank you for contacting me about rooftop solar.

Commit to action for nature!

I appreciate you taking the time to contact me and very much share your wish to see nature and the environment prioritised. I would now like to take some time to respond to the points in your correspondence, and outline the steps the Government is taking to address each of them.

Animal Welfare

I would like to assure you that the Government is firmly committed to maintaining the UK’s strong track record on animal welfare and to delivering continued improvements, both in this Parliament and beyond.

Email Campaigns

Each day I receive several hundred emails and letters, and while I am keen to understand the views of constituents on issues which are important to you, I have to prioritise how I respond to them.

Many of the emails I receive are template campaign emails about Government policy generated by organisations or lobby groups. While I try to respond directly to as many as I can as quickly as I can, I cannot prioritise this over assisting constituents with casework queries – people who are asking for my help with an issue affecting them urgently.

I do take note of all the points made in the course of these campaigns, and I regularly discuss issues with charities or organisations when they raise issues of concern, as well as with Ministers.

I will collate on this page my response to the issues raised by click-and-send campaigns as they arise, and I hope the information these responses contain will be useful to you. Please see the links to the right.

EDMs and Petitions

Please note that I do not sign Early Day Motions as these are never debated or voted on in Parliament, and cannot bind Government policy in any way.

While I am sometimes contacted about signing petitions, there is a process for raising these in Parliament, and only those generated by the official process can be considered. There is no method for bringing non-Parliamentary petitions to the official attention of Parliament or the Government.
